WFP Refutes the Report: Threatens to Stop Food Aid in Nepal
Mukunda | Aug 24 2009

Photo: Food Supplied by WFP in remote Nepal World Food Program (WFP) has threatened to suspend food aid in Nepal refuting the reports that the food distributed under the program in various districts is unfit for human consumption.

Reports said that low quality foods distributed by WFP also contributed to the diarrhea outbreak in the mid and far-western districts. The rotten rice and lentils that cannot be cooked even after two hours of cooking have been proved to have caused the cholera outbreak, is the claim of report.

But the World Health Organization country office for Nepal has denied that WFP rice, edible oils and lentils had caused the outbreak of cholera in the mid-west hills of Nepal. The epidemic claimed 321 lives since April, with 154 deaths in Jajarkot alone.

If WFP suspends the food aid in Nepal, food crisis will be raised in Nepal. Considering the present condition of food supply in Nepal, the remote districts will be victim of this crisis.
